Tamar View Community Complex Ltd is a charity that works for the benefit of the Barne Barton community in Plymouth. It seeks to be a voice for local residents and fight for causes on their behalf, as well as providing opportunities for personal, social and community growth. It has been working in the community since October 2000.
The funding provided by Virginia House Settlement contributed towards an exceptional summer programme of activities for young people from the community aged from 5 to 21. The £1,500 grant benefited approximately 100 young people and enabled them to take part in activities that would normally be out of reach. Young people were taken to Mount Batten Watersports Centre for kayaking and paddle boarding lessons; to Delta Force Paintball Centre for a day of paintballing; and for an overnight stay in London with a trip to Thorpe Park which also enabled the group to access training opportunities as part of a volunteering programme. At our centre, we also put on weekly street dance lessons, weekly football sessions, weekly cookery lessons and a weekly youth drop-in evening.
To sum up the difference made, one young person said: “This has been the best summer of my life and I’ve done things I never thought I’d get to do. Thank you.”
In 2017 Virginia House Settlement provided £1000 of funding for new PC’s to replace old equipment used by their job club. The job club at Tamar View supported 92 individuals since January last year with their job applications. Of these over 30 are known to be in employment.
